The Recommended Instructional Approach in Ghanaian Basic Schools; A Review of Constructivist Approach of Teaching and Learning in the Mathematics Classroom

Teaching and learning mathematics in Ghanaian basic schools has been a concern for many years. This is because of the low learner achievement national assessments by West African Examination Council, where learners’ performance at end primary education consistently low. In other assessments, such as Trends International Mathematics Science Survey (TIMSS) report, average learners below international score. an attempt to address issues improve quality teaching mathematics, there have curriculum reforms that revised content-objective-based learner-standard-based aimed shifting from traditional teacher-centered more learner-centered (constructivist) approaches. Adopting constructivist techniques strategy fostering positive environment produce active enhances both students teachers encourages think critically. this paper, we review approach learning, analyze its successes challenges, discuss implications through constructivism schools.
